We host foreign exchange students from Whittier College which is just a mile away from our house. Mike’s mom [Loretta] got us started hosting students; she’s been hosting for almost 9 years now and it’s an interesting experience. Right now we have a boy named Ren from Japan; he’s 21 and has been making lots of friends (most of them from Japan as well).
Ren is originally from Korea but has been living in Japan for the last 12 years of his life so he speaks Japanese and Korean fluently. Like most foreign students-Ren is here to learn English. We’re really not sure how much English he’s learning, it doesn’t seem like he’s learning much more from when he first arrived. We think this because he’ll give us a nod, say okay and just stare at us after we’ve asked him a question. The fact that all the friends he’s made are Japanese doesn’t help his purpose for learning English.
Either way, we really enjoy Ren and get a kick out of his sense of fashion and random text messages he sends to us when he’s not going to make it home.
Is Ren the same student that was acting like Long Duck Dong from 16 candles when I came over to get Mike and he said 'no ones here's....mike not here...I don't know where anyone is'. I then just walked into your house and Mike was there. Is that him?
ReplyDeleteHaha! No! That was Jake. Jake left because we weren't good enough for him but now he's come to find that we were the best host house. He said he wanted to come back to our house but no go for him. Ren took over and we like him way better! You're funny Lisa ;)
